Blackjack Card Values

Blackjack is usually played with one, two or up to eight decks of 52 cards.

  • Card suits have no meaning
  • All cards count their face value
  • Picture cards count as 10
  • Aces can count as either a 1 or 11

The Joker of Clubs The Queen of Clubs The King of Clubs 10 - Picture cards count as 10
The Ace of Clubs 1 or 11

The total of any hand is the sum of the card values in the hand according to the table above. The cards from 2 to 10 count their face value. Any Picture cards count as 10.

As for the ace, it can be counted as either a 1 or 11. That depends on whether the total of your hand goes over 21. If you have 6, 7 and ace, the last counts as 1, and the total of your hand is 14. Otherwise it counts as 11.

"Hard Hand" is a hand that does not have an ace.

"Soft Hand" is a hand that have an ace.
